Das Süddeutsche Saxophon-Kammerorchester ist eines der ganz wenigen unabhängigen Saxophonorchester in der Welt. Es wurde 1990 von Linda Bangs-Urban zusammen mit einer Gruppe enthusiastischer Saxophonisten gegründet. Das Orchester spielt mit Instrumenten und Mundstücken, die den Originalen von Adolphe Sax nachgebildet und heute fast in Vergessenheit geraten sind. Hierdurch erreicht das Orchester eine homogene Klangfülle, die der ursprünglichen Klangvorstellung von Adolphe Sax wohl am nächsten kommt. |
The concept of a larger saxophone ensemble is almost older than the saxophone itself. The first composition for such a group was written in 1844 by the Alsatian composer and music historian Georges Kastner as a part of the first saxophone method book that Kastner wrote most likely at the suggestion of his friend Adolphe Sax. The first important figure responsible for the development of a serious approach to saxophone playing in Germany was Gustav Bumcke, who founded Ba saxophone class at the Stern'sche Konservatorium in Berlin and furthermore a saxophone chamber orchestra which lasted for many years. |

Durch Auftritte im In- und Ausland (USA, Polen, Schweiz, Holland) hat sich das Orchester internationale Anerkennung erworben. Darüber hinaus ist es auf CDs unter den Labels Phono Suecia und Orgon Records sowie bei verschiedenen Rundfunkproduktionen (HR, SWF, BR) zu hören. Im Repertoire befinden sich zum einen Bearbeitungen von Musik vergangener Epochen (J. S. Bach, A. Vivaldi, J. Brahms, A. Dvorak, E. Grieg etc.), der Schwerpunkt der musikalischen Arbeit liegt aber bei der zeitgenössischen Musik. Zahlreiche namhafte Komponisten haben bereits Werke für das Orchester geschrieben, u.a. Harald Genzmer, Miklos Maros, Augustyn Bloch, Werner Wolf Glaser und Karl-Wieland Kurz. Hans Stadlmair hat nicht nur ein Werk für das Orchester komponiert, sondern es auch mit ihm erarbeitet und als Gastdirigent uraufgeführt. So trägt das Süddeutsche Saxophon-Kammerorchester dazu bei, das ständig wachsende Repertoire orchestraler Saxophonmusik zu erweitern.

Another saxophone pioneer of that time was Sigurd M. Rascher. His work as a
soloist as well as a music pedagogue, especially within summer courses at
various universities, led him to take up again the idea of a large saxophone
ensemble.
Out of this tradition, Linda Bangs founded the South German Saxophone Chamber Orchestra in 1990. From its beginning, this orchestra has been rather unique inthe musical world of Germany and the USA, especially by the use of instruments and mouthpieces following the original acoustical design by the instrument's inventor Adolphe Sax. It is the extraordinary quality of sound that sparked the interest of many composers, such as M. Karkoff, M. Maros, C.W. Smith, A. Bloch, H. Genzmer, H. Stadlmair and others to compose for the South German Saxophone Chamber Orchestra. The cooperation with such composers resulted both in concert tours throughout Germany and abroad and in several CD and radio recordings. The South German Saxophone Chamber Orchestra concertizes at numerous music festivals, concert series, matinees, and official events.
